It could be that male-owned businesses have so dominated for so many years that it will take a while before women-owned businesses catch up. Another theory has it that many of these women entrepreneurs are stay-home mothers who abandon their sole proprietorship as the youngest of their children starts school.

In developing countries, businesses owned by women are finally getting some help in the form of micro-lending. Some businesses, such as clothing alteration, weaving, or other hand-intensive services only need a small amount of money to get off the ground. In the old climate, you could more easily ask for a million dollar loan for a risky venture than ask for a loan of a few hundred dollars, all of which would be put into supplies and other necessary capital.

Thankfully, that is changing now, and another bright spot is that the women who are recipients of micro-loans are often the very ones who make micro-loans as their business takes off to try and help more women start their own businesses.
