Great Outfit in Workplace

June 09, 2011 By: Jocelyn Iyog Category: women's apparel

There was a time not so long ago when women mimicked men in the workplace by wearing mannish suits to work complete with neck scarves standing in for ties. Fortunately, those days are over, and expressing personal style in the office is no longer taboo. There are, however, rules for what to wear in many workplaces, and you should take your work wardrobe cues from women in higher level positions.

One thing you want is to look polished, and you must avoid looking like a fashion victim at work. One good rule of thumb is that the more distracting an accessory or piece of clothing is, the less likely it’s OK to wear to work. Neutral colors like gray, navy, and black, look more conservative and grown up than other colors, and structured handbags look more professional than non-structured ones.

Regardless of where you work, the fit of your clothes is important. Not only are ill-fitting clothes uncomfortable, they are usually unflattering too. It is also vital that you not wear things that are too casual or too sexy. Fortunately, corporate dress rules have loosened up a little in the past 20 years, so that women finally feel like it’s OK to look feminine. But a work wardrobe should almost always be more formal than your “off hours” style.

Dressing the Plus Size Woman

June 09, 2011 By: Jocelyn Iyog Category: Plus size clothes

Any woman larger than a size 12 is familiar with the challenge of finding something that fits properly flatters her figure and looks good. Long gone are the days when plus size women were satisfied hiding their bodies in floppy, loose fitting dresses.
Real women have curves. Real women want and need clothes designed and made with them in mind. The clothes worn in fashion shows by traditional runway models are not for real women with real curves. They are literally walking clothes hangers, showing off a designer’s idea of what a particular outfit should look like. When those runway outfits are reconstructed to fit normal everyday women, they sometimes only bear a vague resemblance to the original design. That’s because proportions need to be adjusted to accommodate bust lines, hips, shoulders, arms and thighs.

The most reasonable course of action for a plus size woman to take is not to even attempt to have one of those tiny outfits remade to fit her, but to have her own original creation custom made just for her or to visit the salon of a designer who specializes in clothes for the larger woman or a boutique that specializes in clothes for the plus size woman. The clothes at plus size specialty houses are absolutely astounding… making petite women want to go out and gain weight. So go ahead, ladies. Select your outfit. Strike your pose and strut your stuff. You are big and beautiful and you know it!

The Basics of Choosing a Plus Size Suit

June 09, 2011 By: Jocelyn Iyog Category: Plus size clothes, women's apparel

Plus size suits consist of a jacket or blazer and a skirt or trousers. The traditional suit colors for work are neutral, conservative colors like navy blue, charcoal gray, and black. But you don’t have to limit yourself to these colors. Darker jewel tones like amethyst and slightly different neutrals like dark olive green look beautiful yet project professionalism.

Suit jackets or blazers don’t necessarily have to be the type that button. Swing jackets, wrap-style jackets, and even zippered jackets are sometimes parts of suits and are sometimes more flattering than traditional blazers.

Suit slacks can be terrific for work when you don’t have to wear skirts. They tend to be a bit easier to move about in, and work with flats or heels. Choose slacks with straight rather than tapered or flared legs to last through several trend cycles in style.

Suit skirts should fall to the knee or slightly below. A-line skirts are usually flattering. Pleats and ruching tend to look busy and can make your bottom half look bigger. Generally, simpler skirt styles look better and weather trends better.

Look for retailers that sell suit pieces separately so that you can get each piece to fit as well as possible. If you’re dropping serious money on a suit, consider having a tailor adjust hems and sleeve lengths to get a perfect fit and make your suit look its best on you.
