Obesity is a serious epidemic in this country. It is a major cause of most chronic illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease and a major contributing factor to some types of cancer. Unfortunately, Just about everyone in the United States will be forced to cope with a weight problem at some time during their lives. The older we get, the bigger our problem with weight control becomes. That’s largely due to our sedentary life style, and of course our diet that is rich in fatty, processed foods.

Sitting around waiting for am magic pill do dissolve the fat away is simply a waste of time. It’s just not going to happen. We run to the stores, spending tons of money on an assortment of medicines and supplements hoping to wake up in the morning with a slimmer, trimmer body just to discover that any success is short lived.

Whether we like it or not, the only way to lose weight and keep it off is a change of lifestyle, which includes changing the way we eat and incorporating an exercise regimen as a permanent part of our routines. Natural weight loss dictates that we consume fewer calories. This means smaller portions, fewer sugars and fewer carbohydrates. It also means that we burn calories through exercise. Whether it is walking, biking, skiing, swimming, tennis, golf, yoga, Pilates or any of the other exercise options, the bottom line is we must follow the advice of a very big sports equipment manufacturer and ‘Just do it.’

How to get rid of extra pounds gained on holidays

There has long been a myth that the average person gains seven pounds over the holidays, but this has largely been disproved. The real story is that people gain less than that, but they tend not to lose it. So if you’re one of the millions who managed to add a few extra pounds over the holidays, here’s how to make them go away.

Extra pounds are like unpleasant house guests: don’t indulge them and they’ll go away. Don’t go on a crash diet or stop eating altogether. Make “baby step” changes. If you’re in the habit of grabbing three or four cookies between meals to tide you over, substitute a piece of fruit for one of those handfuls of cookies. After a week, replace the other handful of cookies with fruit, or even a handful of nuts.

Make other changes you know you can live with. Do you really need the second cup of coffee with cream and sugar? Have you got into the habit of saying “Yes” when the fast food clerk asks if you want to upsize your order? These habits are the “low hanging fruit” that are easiest to change.

Wear good walking shoes when you run household errands, along with a good winter coat when it’s cold. That way you’re not tempted to drive around looking for the closest parking space so you can dash in where it’s warm. And enjoy some of the many non-food rewards out there: a luxurious bubble bath, an evening with your favorite movie, or simply sleeping in on the weekend are treats that don’t have to be accompanied by extra calories.

It is incredibly easy to slip into poor eating habits and then gain weight. Junk foods are readily available and inexpensive, and face it: sometimes you feel like you really need that big chocolate chip cookie to get you through an emotionally draining day. While there is nothing wrong with the occasional treat, if they become everyday occurrences, they won’t be as special, and you’re more likely to add pounds.

One hint that works well in weight loss diet is to follow the general guidelines for people with early type 2 diabetes. The big “rule” is to consume no more than 45 grams of sugars per day. You can find this information on nutrition labels. You could divide the allotment into no more than 15 grams of sugars at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or if it’s an occasion, like a birthday, you can “bank” those 45 grams for one special dessert.

Excess sugar can result in a surge of energy followed by a crash. Cutting sugars to 45 grams or less per day is a healthy, gradual way to loss weight.
