Basic Hair Styling Tools Still Necessary for the Latest Looks

June 09, 2011 By: Jocelyn Iyog Category: Hair

Hair styling tools may cost anywhere from a couple of dollars to several hundred dollars. Price alone doesn’t determine quality, so if you’re expanding your collection of hair tools, or replacing hair styling tools, read the reviews and compare prices online before laying out your hard earned cash.

A basic kit of hair styling tools generally includes the following: hair dryer, curling iron, hairbrush, flat iron, and combs. Choose wisely, and you can make sure that your hair stays healthy and great looking.

A basic paddle brush or cushion brush is an all-around favorite, with paddle brushes generally better for longer hair, and cushion brushes better for shorter hair. Either type is good for daily brushing, distributing the natural oils of your hair, and getting rid of stray or loose hairs before washing. A wide-tooth comb is often the only kind you need, and is just right for detangling after washing and conditioning your hair.

The more often you use a hair dryer or curling iron, the more important it is to choose a model that will last, and that won’t damage your hair. Choose a model that offers several heat and air flow settings, to maximize your styling options. Hair dryers with removable lint filters are best. If you regularly clean the lint filter, you can greatly prolong the life of your hair dryer.

When it comes to flat irons, you’re often better off buying the nicest one you can afford. Higher-end models often have features that can minimize damage to your hair, so if you use one regularly, consider investing in a professional flat iron.

Curly Hairstyle

We went through several years where hair was ironed as straight as possible and curly hair took a definite backseat. But now, thank heaven, those of us with waves or curls can embrace our curliness.

Curly hair tends to be dry and fragile. You can keep it healthy by air drying it as much as possible and using weekly moisturizing conditioning treatments. Leave-in conditioners work great for everyday use.

When it’s time to visit your stylist, make sure that she cuts your hair wet in order to see the curl pattern clearly. Make sure you get long layers, or you’ll end up with a mushroom-shaped ‘do. Some curly headed women recommend choosing a stylist with curly hair on the theory that they know what really works.

Anti-frizz products are your best friend in the summer, as are hair dryers with diffusers. You don’t need a brush or to scrunch your hair with your fingers. Avoid “hot” settings on your hair dryer as much as possible. Adding some shine spray and then giving your hair a quick blast with cool air should work better and be less damaging.
