Caring your Child’s Hair
No child likes to have his or her hair combed and brushed. Shampooing and conditioning is an ordeal that often calls for parents to demonstrate the strength of Hercules and the patience of Job. Most young children have fine hair and tender scalps. This means that their hair is often unmanageable and it sometimes actually does hurt their scalps when you try to tame their unruly locks.
Proper hair care is essential for a developing child. Not only is good grooming part of your child’s personal and social training. It is also healthy. An unkempt, disheveled head of hair could be a haven for lice, which are difficult to get rid of. If you think your little angel hates to get her hair shampooed and conditioned in normal circumstances, imagine her angst when she has to sit through a treatment that requires extensive combing and shampooing following by more combing and conditioning.
Regardless of ethnicity or culture, the following procedures are essential for caring for any child’s hair:
• Use a mild shampoo, formulated for children to wash your child’s hair on a regular basis.
• Gently comb and brush your child’s hair to remove tangles.
• Light brushing is all that is necessary. Over-brushing a child’s hair is not advisable because it can tend to over-stimulate the sebaceous glands, resulting in excessively oily hair.
• Use a large toothed comb immediately after shampooing your child’s hair to get rid of tangles. Start at the base of the scalp and gently comb the hair, a little at a time. A gentle detangler or leave in conditioner will not only help get rid of the tangles it also helps make the entire ordeal easier on your little one.
• Invest in a few inexpensive hair accessories. Your little princess will be more eager to have her hair combed and styled if the reward is a head adorned with an assortment of hair jewelry that compliments her clothes. Before you know it, your little girl will be bringing you handfuls of decorative combs, hair clips, barrettes and hair bands and telling you how to style her hair.
