Almost every American has had a weight loss problem at least once in his or her life. Obesity is one of this century’s major illnesses. Weight loss becomes more problematic with age. Most people are waiting for the magical pill that will solve their entire weight loss problem. Complex medications and herbal treatments have been proposed in an attempt to provide an effortless weight loss solution. But, as most people ultimately discover, the weight loss through these methods always results in a relapse a few months down the line. What people have so far failed to realize that the mechanisms by which the body functions are elaborate enough by themselves to result in a sustained weight loss—if we know how to use them.

Weight loss or gain is simply the difference between the amounts of calories that are coming in versus those that are going out. If more calories are being put in than used up on a daily basis, it is clear that the person will accumulate weight. On the other hand, if fewer calories are consumed with respect to calories that are burned, then there will be weight loss. This is the crux of the natural way to weight loss.

Natural weight loss regimes can involve two aspects: decreased calorific intake in the food (i.e. a balanced diet) or more burning of calories taken in through increased physical activity. Both can be combined in the natural way to weight loss. Weight loss in this way is more sustainable and results in a healthier lifestyle.

It is incredibly easy to slip into poor eating habits and then gain weight. Junk foods are readily available and inexpensive, and face it: sometimes you feel like you really need that big chocolate chip cookie to get you through an emotionally draining day. While there is nothing wrong with the occasional treat, if they become everyday occurrences, they won’t be as special, and you’re more likely to add pounds.

One hint that works well in weight loss diet is to follow the general guidelines for people with early type 2 diabetes. The big “rule” is to consume no more than 45 grams of sugars per day. You can find this information on nutrition labels. You could divide the allotment into no more than 15 grams of sugars at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or if it’s an occasion, like a birthday, you can “bank” those 45 grams for one special dessert.

Excess sugar can result in a surge of energy followed by a crash. Cutting sugars to 45 grams or less per day is a healthy, gradual way to loss weight.

Weight Loss Plans After Holidays

The beginning of the new year is the most common time for people to commit to losing excess weight. Gym memberships usually increase at the first of the year, and after a month or so of indulging at holiday parties, many people are ready to revamp their eating habits. Sadly, many gym personnel refer to the new recruits in January as “Valentines,” because so many of them abandon their weight loss plans by Valentine’s Day. How can you keep from being one of them? Here are three ways.

First, keep your goals reasonable. It took more than a week to gain that excess weight, and it will take longer to lose it. If you completely change your diet from the typical high fat, high carbohydrate diet that causes weight gain, you’ll have a very hard time sticking to it. Incorporate modest changes one at a time and allow them to become second nature, just like overeating did.

Second, make it easier to eat well. If you hit the vending machines because they’re convenient, you’ll find that it’s far more convenient to keep a paper bag with a few pieces of fruit in it on your desk.

Third, find a non-food way to treat yourself. If you’ve had a hard day, a lovely hot bath can be just as relaxing as a slice of pie. If you reach your goal of dropping a pound or two in a week, a bright and luxurious winter scarf will bring more lasting pleasure than a double mocha latte with whipped cream.

Don’t turn weight loss into an “all or nothing” proposition. The ones who succeed take it slowly and make changes that they know they can live with.

Obesity is a serious epidemic in this country. It is a major cause of most chronic illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease and a major contributing factor to some types of cancer. Unfortunately, Just about everyone in the United States will be forced to cope with a weight problem at some time during their lives. The older we get, the bigger our problem with weight control becomes. That’s largely due to our sedentary life style, and of course our diet that is rich in fatty, processed foods.

Sitting around waiting for am magic pill do dissolve the fat away is simply a waste of time. It’s just not going to happen. We run to the stores, spending tons of money on an assortment of medicines and supplements hoping to wake up in the morning with a slimmer, trimmer body just to discover that any success is short lived.

Whether we like it or not, the only way to lose weight and keep it off is a change of lifestyle, which includes changing the way we eat and incorporating an exercise regimen as a permanent part of our routines. Natural weight loss dictates that we consume fewer calories. This means smaller portions, fewer sugars and fewer carbohydrates. It also means that we burn calories through exercise. Whether it is walking, biking, skiing, swimming, tennis, golf, yoga, Pilates or any of the other exercise options, the bottom line is we must follow the advice of a very big sports equipment manufacturer and ‘Just do it.’
